Keeper Deyren, one of the city’s guardians, reveals that the lanterns hold echoes of people who bound themselves to light when the world collapsed. They are not fully alive but fragments of memory and soul. These echoes maintain the city’s survival by holding back the sea. Yet when Mariel touches them, they stir and whisper for release.
