Elin reads perfume for a living. A cold room three floors down, cotton gloves that come in one size, sixty-year-old formula cards nobody upstairs has asked to see in years.
She has ten days off. On the second evening she goes out for milk, takes the short way behind the watchmaker's that shut in the spring, and stops halfway down the lane because the cold air has burnt sugar in it. Warm paper under that. Then stone, and the stone has no business being warm.
The lane has a door in it where it ought to have a wall.
Past the door, weather is sold by the spoonful and the man selling it will argue the grade with you. Everyone there finds this ordinary. Elin is having more trouble with that than with the market itself.
