Leave the light above the sink on after 10:30 p.m.
Keep the hallway cupboard locked between midnight and 6:00 a.m.
If the telephone rings after 1:00 a.m., let it ring.
Daniel laughs. Mara throws the list away. By morning it's back on the counter — smoothed flat, waiting.
Then the rules change. One starts using her name. A neighbor hints at the woman who lived here before. A brass plaque appears beneath a chair that shouldn't exist, bearing Mara's name and a date years away.
The rules aren't there to protect the house. They're there to make Mara remember.
Some doors were locked for a reason — and everyone who claims to love her has already decided how much of the truth she's allowed.
