There he found the Taino Indians, who mistakenly showed him the local abundance and wealth. Their fate was doomed ever since. The Taino Indians were not a laborious race to begin with. But after Puerto Rico was established as a colonial stronghold, they survived poverty, plagues and hurricanes on their own.
