The war has a date now, and it is a year off. That is the whole of the trouble. A year is long enough for a kingdom to lose its nerve, and the King of the South has ninety-one great houses to bring through it without a single one being ordered to do anything.
So he asks. He asks a wolf lord to walk his city with three men and a wolf on every patrol, and a plague at High Pass is answered with a page and a half on how to behave. He asks the whole ninety-one to the capital and describes to them, rather than threatens, what is coming. He asks an old general what the Commander's armour really is and gets an answer he would rather not have had.
