Then Maggie overhears two men in the feed store talking about a stipulation in a land trust, and the phrase that sticks is *the wife requirement*.
Jack Hargrove says it out loud at the town hall meeting, in front of everybody. He represents Wolf River Holdings. His grandfather's trust will not release without a marriage, and he needs one by the end of the quarter.
What Maggie does next is arithmetic, not romance. Secrecy. A prenup. Public appearances as needed. Six months, because that is what the trustees require, and a non-disclosure clause in section four that says she cannot tell her sister, her friends or her priest.
She tells Ruby they are dating.
What neither of them plans for is the rest of it: a calf wedged between boulders at the bottom of a ravine, a rival with a sharp blonde bob and a daughter of her own to offer, a rodeo, a ring that does not fit, and a grandfather's actual reason for writing that clause, which turns out to be neither traditional nor about control.
