About this audiobook

Thomas Moore's The Epicurean: A Tale (1827) is a richly ornamented historical romance set amid the religious and philosophical world of late-antique Egypt. Its young Athenian protagonist, Alciphron, pursues sensual delight and the promise of earthly immortality, only to encounter the mysteries of Isis, the claims of Christianity, and a love that unsettles his Epicurean convictions. Combining antiquarian scenery, Gothic suspense, erotic idealism, and meditative dialogue, Moore transforms the ancient world into a Romantic arena in which pagan pleasure confronts spiritual transcendence. The novel belongs to the nineteenth-century vogue for Orientalist and classical fiction, while its ornate prose and symbolic contrasts reveal the influence of the Romantic fascination with ritual, ruins, secrecy, and exotic landscapes. Moore (1779–1852), the Irish poet, lyricist, satirist, and author of the celebrated Oriental romance Lalla Rookh, was deeply interested in the meeting of cultures, religions, and literary traditions. His extensive engagement with classical subjects and Eastern settings, together with the political and confessional tensions of his Irish experience, informed his sympathy for marginalized voices and his ambivalence toward religious authority. The Epicurean reflects this intellectual background: it is at once an imaginative escape into antiquity and a serious inquiry into the ethical limits of pleasure, skepticism, and desire for permanence. Readers interested in Romantic historical fiction, classical reception, comparative religion, or the literary construction of the "Orient" will find the novel especially rewarding. Its luxuriant style may challenge modern tastes, but that very excess is central to Moore's artistic purpose. The book is best approached not merely as an adventure tale, but as a philosophical romance whose sensual spectacle gradually opens onto questions of mortality, faith, and moral transformation.
