*You talking to yourself again?*
Nat Ward turns up the next week with a careful small smile that does not reach his eyes and a line about the man at the general store being very helpful.
*He said you know the waters better than anyone on the coast.*
*He said that?*
*He also said you're carrying something.*
What follows: a man who does not belong here, a timber dealer's price, a net he cannot untangle, a bowl of chowder and a question, the reason a man leaves his own name behind, and a knot that binds rather than holds.
*You lied to her. You lied to yourself. And now you're going to marry Clara Davenport.*
The cost is exact and it is not shared. Liam loses the harbour's good opinion, which is the only currency his family has left. Nat loses the new name he built at considerable expense, and he hands it over in daylight, in front of people, because there is no quiet version of this.
