About this audiobook

The Complete Short Stories gathers Robert Louis Stevenson's remarkably varied achievements in short fiction, from Gothic masterpieces such as "The Body-Snatcher" and "Markheim" to the ingenious linked tales of the New Arabian Nights and the morally charged island narratives of the South Seas. These stories combine romance, psychological suspense, adventure, and fable with a prose style at once lucid, musical, and tightly controlled. Written in the late Victorian period, they stand at the crossroads of sensation fiction, imperial adventure, and emerging modern psychological narrative. Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet, and traveler whose fragile health and restless imagination shaped both his life and art. Born in Edinburgh in 1850, he resisted the engineering profession of his lighthouse-building family and pursued literature with unusual intensity. His travels through Europe, America, and the Pacific, together with his fascination with moral doubleness, social masks, and the romance of danger, deeply inform these compact narratives. This collection is recommended to readers who wish to encounter Stevenson beyond Treasure Island and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It reveals a writer of extraordinary range: elegant, unsettling, humane, and formally inventive. For students of Victorian literature and general readers alike, these stories offer enduring pleasures and serious reflections on conscience, identity, and civilization.
