About this audiobook
The Collected Works: Novels, Short Stories, Plays and Travel Sketches gathers the breadth of W. Somerset Maugham's art: the ironic social novel, the sharply turned tale, the theatrically poised drama, and the observant travel piece. Across works such as Of Human Bondage, The Moon and Sixpence, and his South Seas stories, Maugham combines lucid prose, psychological acuity, and a classical sense of narrative proportion. Writing in the wake of Victorian realism yet alert to modern disillusionment, he fashioned a cosmopolitan literature of desire, self-deception, exile, and moral ambiguity. William Somerset Maugham (1874–1965) was trained as a physician before becoming one of the most widely read English authors of the twentieth century, a background that sharpened his diagnostic eye for human weakness. His childhood in Paris, early orphanhood, medical work among the poor, wartime intelligence service, and extensive travels through Europe, Asia, and the Pacific all furnished the human variety and worldly skepticism that animate these works. This collection is recommended to readers seeking both literary elegance and narrative pleasure. It offers an indispensable panorama of Maugham's achievement and of a vanished international world rendered with wit, restraint, and penetrating sympathy.
