About this audiobook
Declan kills the headlights at the back of the arena and lets the dark swallow the truck. The loading dock sits there like a mouth left open. Dead quiet. He propped the door with a wedge of wood at noon, before anyone thought to check.
*"Keep your voice down, okay? This is a secret mission."*
Ella is five. She is warm in a pink puffy coat, her skates swinging from his jacket pocket on laces she knotted herself at home. The staff know Declan Hartley comes in late sometimes and likes the ice quiet. They do not know he brings a child through the loading dock after hours.
Then a floodlight goes off in his face at the end of the corridor, and a voice tells him to identify himself.
Hannah Chen started that morning. New PR coordinator, black wool coat, phone held like a weapon, and she has already read his emergency contact list. She looks at the toddler skates with the cartoon animals on the sides and asks whether the friend's kid has a name.
She does not put Ella in the incident report.
What Declan is protecting is three years of walls. What Hannah is carrying is a tab in the back of her notebook, written in black ink with a small star beside it, that she has not opened since she packed her desk at a Minneapolis firm and drove north.
The front office wants a community event in six days. Face painting, bounce houses, sponsors. Somebody has to run it, and somebody on the team has to be the face of it, and the two people least willing to be seen are the two people assigned to each other.
There is also a brother. Finn had freckles and a grin that split his face in two, and he has been dead six years, and Declan learned to say nothing at all in the months after. Tessa Nguyen has been keeping his secrets the whole time and will not explain why to anyone.
A closed-door small-town hockey romance about a single father who skates at midnight with his kid, a publicist with her own file she cannot open, and what happens when the story gets out anyway and someone finally stands on the ice and tells it properly.
