Astell Crowe was the strongest archmage who ever lived, and forty years ago he cast a spell to forget all of it. He wanted a fishing village, a gutting knife, and a long quiet century. The spell broke on a Tuesday. Now two students are calling him by names from a war he can't remember, the capital runs on a Guild that has reprinted his own spells as their class system, and the last colleague who knew him has spent four decades editing history to blame him for the greatest disaster in memory. Astell has to level from 1 to 999 to fix any of it — and every level returns a person he failed to save. He could ask for his whole memory back. He is starting to suspect he will not like the language of the request.
