Isolde Marchetti is twenty-six, a cartographer with one specialty: making fold space legible. The Survey assigns her to the Madrigal, where the navigator is Kel-Avan, four decades her senior by his own count and the man who drew the first charts of her home system. He is quiet, exacting, and old enough to remember things the Survey would rather forget. Four months into the voyage they exit the fold into a graveyard of ships around a dead star, every hull flying the flag of Kel-Avan's old fleet. He put them there. She wants to log the find. He wants to leave it. They compromise, and then the star wakes, the corridor closes, and the only way home is a chart no one has ever drawn. She draws it. He gives her his seal. They sail again in the fall.
