About this audiobook
Sirius (1944) is a searching fable of scientific ambition and metaphysical loneliness, centred on a sheepdog endowed with human-level intelligence by the biologist Thomas Trelone and raised alongside Trelone's daughter, Plaxy. Stapledon combines pastoral realism, tragic romance, and philosophical science fiction to examine consciousness, species hierarchy, religion, sexuality, and the limits of sympathy. Written during the mature phase of British speculative fiction, the novel extends the moral seriousness of H. G. Wells while anticipating later debates about animal minds and bioethics. Olaf Stapledon (1886–1950), philosopher, pacifist, and visionary novelist, brought to fiction a rare fusion of scientific imagination and ethical inquiry. His experiences in the First World War ambulance service, his academic work in philosophy, and his abiding concern with humanity's spiritual evolution shaped works such as Last and First Men and Star Maker. Sirius translates these cosmic preoccupations into an intimate, embodied tragedy. This is recommended for readers who value speculative fiction as literature of ideas rather than mere prediction. Humane, unsettling, and intellectually exacting, Sirius rewards those interested in animal studies, philosophy of mind, and the tragic costs of making a being too singular for any existing world.
