The Building's ConfessionBy Chris A. Piazza | Antherra™Length51m
About this audiobook
There is a corner where two roads the city stopped repairing meet, and the only warm light for a mile comes from a store that sells every legal way to lose. It keeps the heat a few degrees too high on purpose — cold people leave, warm people stay, and the longer a person stays the more of them the building keeps. Behind the counters stand people running the same machine that is quietly eating them: a clerk who knows everyone’s number to the dollar, a man who has played the address of a demolished house on the lottery for thirty years, a wedding ring counting down on a pawn clock toward a marriage that is already over. The store narrates all of it in the flat voice of a ledger that has, against its own wiring, started to grieve. It has only ever asked one question, and it has been asking since the door swung shut.
