About this audiobook
Abraham Merritt's Seven Footprints to Satan (1928) is a feverish blend of occult fantasy, detective intrigue, and pulp adventure. Its imperiled protagonists are drawn into the subterranean domain of a criminal mastermind known as Satan, where abduction, scientific marvels, grotesque creatures, and psychological manipulation transform a rescue quest into a confrontation with hidden powers. Merritt's prose combines rapid, cinematic movement with lush descriptions of fantastic environments, producing an atmosphere that is simultaneously sensational and dreamlike. The novel belongs to the interwar tradition of "weird fiction," standing between the lost-world romance, the gothic tale, and the emergent science fantasy popularized by the pulp magazines; its Satanic imagery is less theological than theatrical, embodying fears about modern technology, wealth, and clandestine authority. Merritt (1884–1943) was a journalist, editor, and influential practitioner of early twentieth-century fantastic fiction. His professional familiarity with serialized popular writing helped shape his tightly paced plots, while his enduring interest in archaeology, occultism, folklore, and speculative science supplied the imaginative materials of his novels. As the author of The Moon Pool and other works of lost civilizations and alien wonders, he repeatedly explored the border between rational investigation and supernatural terror. Seven Footprints to Satan reflects that characteristic synthesis, enlarging the adventure story into a mythic inquiry into the unknown. Readers interested in pulp history, gothic fantasy, and the origins of modern science fiction will find this novel especially rewarding. Its extravagant invention and subterranean spectacle are matched by a revealing portrait of interwar anxieties, making it valuable both as thrilling entertainment and as a document of popular literary culture.
