When tanks first appeared on the battlefields of the First World War in 1916, they were unlike anything the world had ever seen. Slow, unreliable, unbearably hot, and often breaking down before reaching the enemy, these early armoured machines nevertheless marked the beginning of a new era in warfare.
Life in a Tank is one of the earliest firsthand accounts ever written by a British tank officer. Its author, Richard Haigh, began the war as an infantry officer with the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Wounded twice and awarded the Military Cross for gallantry, he volunteered for the newly formed Tank Corps in late 1916, becoming one of the pioneers of armoured warfare.
Published in 1918 while the war was still being fought, this memoir captures the excitement, uncertainty, and danger of serving in the first generation of tanks.
