After Linus testifies against Stan, he enters foster care, eventually finding a loving home with Margaret and David Thornton. He discovers his mother's bank book, learns Stan had a degenerative disease that fueled his cruelty, and slowly heals through therapy and friendship. As an adult, Linus becomes a therapist for traumatized children, breaking the cycle of abuse. Stan dies in prison, and Linus forgives his mother—and himself—finally free.
