Post-Biblical Hebrew Literature (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. Anthology of Medieval Jewish Texts & WritingsBy Benzion Halper
Length7h 19m
About this audiobook
Post-Biblical Hebrew Literature presents the long afterlife of Hebrew letters, tracing their movement from rabbinic discourse and liturgical poetry through medieval philosophy, ethical writing, narrative, and the beginnings of modern expression. Written as a learned historical survey, it balances exposition with critical appreciation, showing how Hebrew survived not as a relic of Scripture but as a supple medium of law, devotion, speculation, and art. Halper situates texts within the wider Jewish encounter with Hellenistic, Islamic, and European cultures, making literary history inseparable from intellectual history. Benzion Halper, a scholar of Hebrew and Semitic learning, belonged to the generation that sought to recover Jewish textual continuity for modern readers and students. His philological training and pedagogical commitments shaped the book's orderly design: authors, genres, and periods are introduced with clarity, yet with respect for the dense traditions from which they emerge. The work reflects an educator's conviction that post-biblical Hebrew must be understood on its own terms, not merely as an appendix to the Bible. This volume is recommended to readers seeking a compact but authoritative entrance into the Hebrew canon beyond Scripture. Students of Jewish literature, comparative religion, and intellectual history will find it especially valuable.
