This is fourth Tom Tompkins book and it opens with a dreadful and deeply personal tragedy. Tom has to cope with this while still being actively involved in the investigations of Thornham CID. There have been changes in the years since we last visited the Serious Crimes Unit with old faces now gone and new ones appearing. Tom continues to have a complex relationship with Pauline Caves, the murderous psychopath who remains in secure detention, although she's able to help him in a variety of ways.
