"Adam Bede" is a classic novel by George Eliot, set in a rural English community in the 18th century. It centers around Adam Bede, a hardworking carpenter who is in love with the pretty yet shallow Hetty Sorrel. Hetty, however, is attracted to the local squire’s charming grandson, Arthur Donnithorne. When Hetty becomes pregnant with Arthur's child, she abandons the baby, leading to a trial for infanticide. The novel explores themes of love, morality, community and the consequences of our actions.
