About this audiobook
In the late Middle Ages, Orontius grows up in poverty in a peasant family. After his mother’s sudden death, his father entrusts him to the vagabond Eberlein, hoping to spare him hunger and hardship. In return, Eberlein must take Orontius to a monastery in Siegen on his fifteenth birthday. An adventurous journey begins.
At the monastery, Orontius discovers the life of the Franciscans and becomes a monk. He forms a deep friendship with Gregory of Metz, but begins to doubt the integrity of the abbot, to whom he is related, as questions about his own origins begin to haunt him.
After more than two decades, Orontius leaves the monastery to visit his father, only to find that everything has changed. From then on, he encounters life in all its brutality—and all its beauty.
