3Nightmares and Terrors
27A change of scenery is always good
4A night terror, an episode that can range from five to twenty minutes in duration, leaves the individual awake, although they remain asleep, sometimes even with their eyes open. After awakening, the subject usually remembers only intense fear, not the specific events. This, however, is not always the case. A few people interviewed can remember portions of the night terror, and some remember the whole thing.
28What's the Difference?
5Nightmares occur during the dream phase of sleep, known as REM sleep. Most people enter the REM stage of sleep after 90 minutes of sleep. The circumstances of the nightmare will frighten the sleeper, who usually will wake up with a vivid memory of a long movie-like dream. Night terrors occur during a phase of deep non-REM sleep, usually within an hour after the subject goes to bed. People also call this stage 4.

8Distressing, unwanted, and recurrent memories of the traumatic event continuously intrude upon the individual's thoughts.

9Nightmares and upsetting dreams, filled with the imagery and emotions of the traumatic event, haunt our very thoughts. At any moment, something can trigger us. Flashbacks make it feel like the trauma is happening all over again. Intrusive memories remind us of the event. This might cause you to experience intense emotional distress manifested through physical symptoms or severe emotional upheaval.
