On the Duty of Civil Disobedience is an essay in political science by Henry David Thoreau, originally published in 1849 as "Resistance to Civil Government". The author argues that individuals should not allow governments to weaken their ethics and morals. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican-American War.
