The narrator, a documentary filmmaker, witnesses Victor Sterling and Dr. Moreau perform a necromantic ritual to resurrect Shadowfax, a legendary racehorse champion believed to have died in a fire. The revived horse, named Nightshade, is a skeletal creature who shows signs of fear and remembering the fire. Stable foreman Jake suspects the horse was betrayed and believes Victor was involved. Victor is driven by greed and pushes Nightshade to win the Kentucky Derby, dismissing concerns about his condition. After confrontations, Jake and Moreau disappear.
