Theo Okafor has thirty-two days of residency left and no plan. He takes a locum in a coastal town with one ferry, two pubs, and a whole lot of weather, expecting to be bored back into wanting his old life.
What he finds is a town with a monster in it — and that monster does house calls.
Mirek is nine feet of mossy patience who has been keeping Cairnport alive since long before Theo was born. He does not need a doctor. The town does. So they split the roster, and then they split the nights, and then they split a bed, and Theo starts to suspect he has finally found the one shift he wants to stay on for good.
When the mainland tries to close the clinic and file Mirek under 'specimen,' Theo has to learn to do something harder than surgery.
