About this audiobook

Lucian's True History is a satirical work that boldly defies the conventions of its time, providing an early example of what can be deemed science fiction. Written in the second century CE, it narrates a fantastical voyage to the moon and beyond, where Lucian encounters bizarre inhabitants and absurd scenarios that challenge the very fabric of reality and truth. His witty prose and sharp humor reflect a sophisticated literary style that critiques both mythological narratives and the historical accounts of his contemporaries, showcasing his prowess in blending irony and philosophy within an imaginative framework. Born in Samosata, Lucian was a gifted rhetorician and philosopher whose travels across the Roman Empire informed his perspectives on culture and society. Educated in the rich traditions of Greek literature, he was influenced by both classical authors and the emerging schools of thought that questioned the essence of reality. This background enabled Lucian to craft a text that not only entertains but also stimulates critical thought, inviting readers to reflect on the nature of truth and storytelling. Lucian's True History is essential reading for anyone interested in the intersection of fantasy and reality, as well as the evolution of satire in literature. It serves as an entertaining yet incisive commentary on human nature and the absurdities of life, making it a compelling choice for scholars, students, and casual readers alike.
