Como única pista, los secuestradores envían un extraño poema lleno de símbolos: una mujer ciega que hila, un granero en Noruega y un lugar llamado "los Campos del Edén"
Mientras Hannay y Greenslade intentan descifrar el enigma, surge el nombre de Dominick Medina, un hombre carismático y culto que parece conocer referencias relacionadas con el misterioso poema. Aunque Medina causa una fuerte impresión en Hannay, su viejo amigo Sandy Arbuthnot sospecha que algo no encaja en su historia.
A partir de ese momento, Hannay se ve arrastrado a un mundo inquietante donde la hipnosis, los engaños y las identidades ocultas forman parte de una conspiración mucho más profunda de lo que imaginaba. En casas elegantes, clubes nocturnos y lugares remotos de Europa, descubre personajes extraños como Madame Breda, una misteriosa masajista, la enigmática joven Gerda, y una aterradora anciana ciega vinculada al círculo de Medina.
