And out at the end of the line, past the last lamp, a survey nobody can explain, a transit still level after two winters, and a field book buried in a biscuit tin by somebody who did the work properly when there was nobody left to see it. Load Shed is Book Three of Gridfall: hard System economics, blue-collar competence, a found family that argues in writing and dies for each other anyway, and a promise kept to the letter on the exact day it came due. For readers who think the best superpower is a man who knows what he is doing, and the best twist is a county that counts its people out loud before it decides anything.
