About this audiobook
Late and Soon gathers a late Delafield novel with eight short stories, presenting English middle-class life as a field of small ceremonies, delayed recognitions, and moral evasions. Its title's Wordsworthian echo—"The world is too much with us"—aptly frames a fiction concerned with wasted energies and compromised affections. Delafield's lucid, conversational irony turns domestic minutiae into social diagnosis, placing the volume between Austenian comedy of manners and the darker realism of wartime Britain. E. M. Delafield, the pen name of Edmée Elizabeth Monica Dashwood (née de la Pasture), wrote from intimate knowledge of the institutions she anatomized: convent schooling, wartime service, marriage, motherhood, provincial respectability, and literary labour. Best remembered for The Diary of a Provincial Lady, she also produced sharper, more sombre studies of women constrained by class, duty, and habit; this late work distils those preoccupations. Readers seeking only the comic Provincial Lady will find here a deeper register: wit chastened by compassion. Late and Soon is recommended to admirers of Barbara Pym, Elizabeth Taylor, and interwar women's fiction, and to anyone interested in how social comedy becomes ethical inquiry.
