About this audiobook
Kiana: A Tradition of Hawaii is a nineteenth-century historical romance that frames Hawaiian oral tradition within the conventions of Anglo-American prose fiction. Blending legend, ethnographic observation, and sentimental narrative, the book presents island society at a moment of cultural intensity, evoking chiefly authority, ritual life, landscape, and memory. Its style is ornate and didactic, characteristic of mid-Victorian travel romance, yet it is also shaped by the early literary encounter between Hawaiian traditions and Western readerships. James Jackson Jarves was an American journalist, editor, art critic, and diplomat who spent formative years in the Hawaiian Islands. He founded and edited The Polynesian, wrote historical accounts of Hawaii, and observed the kingdom during a period of rapid political, religious, and social transformation. His interest in Kiana reflects both his fascination with indigenous tradition and his nineteenth-century impulse to interpret Pacific cultures for Euro-American audiences, sometimes sympathetically, sometimes through the assumptions of his age. This book is recommended to readers interested in early Pacific literature, Hawaiian cultural representation, colonial-era romance, and the history of cross-cultural storytelling. Read critically, it offers not only a dramatic tale but also a revealing document of how Hawaii was imagined, translated, and literary constructed for the nineteenth-century world.
