Wilbur Grubb failed the company safety exam. Not because he didn't know the answers, but because he kept giving the sensible one: he wouldn't be there in the first place.
Unfortunately, Consolidated Frontier Holdings is desperately short of warm bodies. So Wilbur is issued a duster, assigned the frontier handle "Deadeye," and shipped to the CFV Sweetwater, a rusting strip-mining barge where "authentic frontier living" is compulsory, high-noon duels are team-building, the drawling ship's AI mistakes his terror for wisdom, and the last crew hand died doing what he loved. Probably something stupid.
Wilbur has one ambition. Do not die.
It will not be simple. The barge is behind quota, a corporate auditor is aboard deciding whether it's cheaper scrapped, and the captain has a plan to save everyone that is going to get everyone killed.
Good thing Wilbur is very, very good at running away.
