Six years ago, Anne de Bourgh refused an offer of marriage from a gentleman whom she loved but who was of little fortune or standing. She had seen the agony of an unequal marriage play out in her own home. It was not what she wanted for her future. Therefore, when her mother and uncle try to force a marriage arrangement between her and her cousin, she decides to take her future into her own hands and places an advertisement in the paper.
