מה הקשר בין עלי בבא לחג הפסח? כאשר ציפיתי באביב בעיירה בדרום הארץ בהצגה לכבוד הפסח, הזכיר לי המחזה את הסיפור הידוע על עלי בבא. תמהתי: מה לזה ולחג האביב? על שאלתי ענה לי הבמאי, כי המחיז מעשייה עממית, הרווחת בין יהודי טוניסיה. הדבר עורר את סקרנותי. עיינתי בספר שעליו הצביע ומצאתי את הסיפור האוצר במערה, הדומה למעשה בעלי בבא, אלא שבמקום 40 שודדים מופיעים בו 7 ענקים, והגיבור הוא יהודי עני. באותו קובץ, ובנוספים, מצאתי סיפורים מרתקים שנרשמו מפי מספרים מעדות ישראל. מדוע בחרתי סיפורים אלה? מתוך מאות הסיפורים שקראתי בחרתי אותם עשרות, שנושאיהם נראו לי מתאימים לגילאי הגן והכיתות הנמוכות. עיבדתי אותם תוך שמירה על סגנונם המיוחד. מכל הנוסחים השונים השתדלתי לבחור בזה שנראה לי הקריא, המעניין והמתאים לילדים. כל הסיפורים עובדו על-ידיי לפי סיפוריהם של יהודי תימן, עירק, לוב, מרוקו, אלג´יר, טוניסיה, לבנון, סוריה, אפגניסטן, בוכרה, פרס, הודו, ספרד, מצרים וארצות הבלקן. הם מכונסים בשלושה ספרים: השד בכד, הסוד בבאר והאוצר במערה. אני מקווה כי הקוראים ימצאו בסיפורים אלה עניין וייהנו מהם כמוני. דבורה עומר
