Gay Life (The Côte d'Azur Stories During Jazz Age): Satirical Novel of French Riviera Lifestyle (Annotated)

About this audiobook
Gay Life offers a sharply observant portrait of the Côte d'Azur in the Jazz Age, when sunlit leisure, hotel society, flirtation, and fashionable idleness became emblems of modern sophistication. Delafield's satire is urbane rather than cruel: through poised dialogue, social misreadings, and understated irony, she exposes the anxieties beneath pleasure-seeking expatriate life. The book belongs to the interwar tradition of comic social fiction, yet its Riviera setting gives its comedy a glittering, cosmopolitan edge. E. M. Delafield, the pen name of Edmée Elizabeth Monica Dashwood, was one of the most perceptive British satirists of middle- and upper-middle-class manners. Best known for The Diary of a Provincial Lady, she wrote from intimate knowledge of social expectation, gender constraint, domestic performance, and the rituals by which respectable people disguise insecurity. Her own experience of English society, travel, and women's precarious freedoms informs the novel's amused but searching intelligence. Readers interested in interwar fiction, women's satire, and the mythology of the French Riviera will find Gay Life both entertaining and revealing. It is recommended not merely as a period comedy, but as a finely calibrated study of modern leisure, self-fashioning, and social illusion.
