John Thornton, a powerful Northern industrialist, forces Southern aristocrat Montgomery Beaumont to offer his daughter, Margaret, as payment for a substantial debt. Margaret, disdainful of the gritty industrial North, is brought to Manchester to work in Thornton's mill office.
