About this audiobook
Sorcha carries fire in her hands and a sister she would burn the realm to protect. Roderick is the prince sent to secure a bargain she has already refused once, in public, to his father's face.
King Aldric Ignis does not look up from the treaty scroll when he is told it cannot be done. The afternoon sun catches the silver threading his copper beard and the Flame-brand on his temple, and he keeps reading, because in his long experience people reconsider.
The Emberheart Accord is not an alliance. It is a receipt.
What neither crown accounts for is what happens when the two people being traded begin keeping their own counsel — a thorn that draws blood the first time it is touched, a dinner where the ashes are entirely the point, a chamber below the tower that no architect will admit to designing, and a willow that has been weeping over something specific for a great many years.
Marren stands, and the chair scrapes back, and his single eye moves across the council until the room goes silent — not from respect, which he has never required, but from fear, which he finds more reliable.
Sorcha has seen that look before. She knows what follows it.
There is stolen flame-dust and a fire-eater's whisper that costs more to hear than to ignore. There is a confession from a traitor that arrives far too late to be useful and far too early to be survivable. There is a cage, and a fire inside it, and a Festival of Embers that the whole realm attends and nobody enjoys.
*I was afraid,* he says.
*Afraid.* She laughs, and it tastes like ash. *You were afraid I might think you a traitor. So instead you let me walk into every trap blind. Let me trust Kip. Let me believe my sister's death was my fault. Let me almost burn on a pyre, knowing you had—*
Her voice cracks. She does not finish it. She does not have to.
She gives him a wisp of her flame sealed in glass with a drop of her blood. *In case you need light,* she says. *Or a way to burn a path.*
He kisses her, quick and hard, and promises to meet her on the roof.
One of them is going to break the Accord.
The other will have to decide what that costs — and the price already named is one that neither house can pay without ending.
