About this audiobook
Bat Wing is a richly atmospheric mystery in which Sax Rohmer blends country-house detection, Gothic suggestion, and imperial-era fascination with the occult. Centered on the investigator Paul Harley, the novel turns on ominous signs, strange survivals of West Indian ritual, and a murder whose clues seem to hover between rational inquiry and supernatural dread. Rohmer's prose is melodramatic yet controlled, full of shadowed rooms, cryptic warnings, and heightened suspense, placing the book within the early twentieth-century tradition of popular detective fiction shaped by sensation literature and fin-de-siècle exoticism. Sax Rohmer, the pen name of Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward, was a British writer best known for creating Dr. Fu Manchu, but his interests ranged beyond that notorious figure. His career in journalism and commercial fiction, together with a lifelong attraction to esoteric lore, secret societies, and theatrical effects, helped form the imaginative world of Bat Wing. The novel reflects both his narrative craftsmanship and the cultural assumptions of his age. Readers who enjoy classic mysteries with an eerie, occult-inflected atmosphere will find Bat Wing especially rewarding. It offers brisk plotting, memorable mood, and a revealing glimpse of interwar popular fiction's anxieties and fascinations.
