'Barlaam and Ioasaph' is a religious Christian novel written by Saint John of Damascus. The story focuses on the life transformation of Prince Ioasaph. Despite his luxurious life, Ioasaph felt unsettled and started seeking enlightenment, which he found through teachings by hermit Barlaam. The book is based on the story of Gautama Buddha but intertwined with Christian teachings. It explores themes of asceticism, faith, and salvation and was translated by Harold Mattingly and George Ratcliffe Woodward.
