About this audiobook
Radom begins to forget its own streets.
Marta Wolska, an archivist at the Municipal Archives, notices the first impossible change during a night spent examining an old register of street names. Ulica Bernardyńska disappears from a photograph. Then from digital maps. Then from official systems. The road itself is still there, but its name is slipping out of the city - and out of people's memory.
Beneath the archives, something answers.
Marta soon discovers that forty-nine streets form part of a forgotten system older than the modern city. Their names are not merely labels. They are tied to a buried network of passages, sealed chambers, and soldiers who have been waiting beneath Radom for generations. Every broken street name weakens the arrangement that keeps them below. Some of the awakened warriors fear what is returning. Others still believe they owe loyalty to a ruler buried deep in the city's forgotten past.
The only way to restore a broken name comes with a cost. A living witness must surrender a memory of a place that truly mattered to them. Saving a street can mean losing a room, a voice, a station platform, or the emotional reality of a moment that helped shape an entire life.
Marta is not a warrior, a sorcerer, or the heir to a prophecy. She is an archivist. Her weapons are documents, maps, contradictory records, witnesses, and a professional instinct for noticing when one version of history does not match another. With help from GIS specialist Paweł Krajewski, archive director Anna Kordas, and retired conservator Jerzy Leszczyński, she tries to understand rules that have survived only in fragments.
Then Michał Radecki enters the story.
An archaeologist connected to an abandoned excavation beneath Radom's Market Square, Radecki knows more about the underground chambers than anyone still living. He also has a deeply personal reason for challenging the old system. His actions force Marta to confront an uncomfortable possibility: perhaps the people who guarded the city for generations never fully understood what they were preserving - or what they were sacrificing.
As modern databases begin displaying ancient road names, social media spreads forgotten versions of the city faster than anyone can contain them. Memory becomes contagious. Technology does not stand outside the supernatural conflict; it amplifies it. A map update, a radio broadcast, a repeated name, or a viral post can strengthen one version of reality over another.
A King Sleeps Beneath Radom is a contemporary urban dark fantasy about archives, collective memory, hidden history, and the power of names. It asks what happens when a city remembers too much, too little, or differently - and who gets to decide which version of the past becomes real.
