Zola’s story takes place between 1911 and 1915. The events during this time were taken from her son's journal about the Tjomsland family. Zola's life as an adult began when she was barely sixteen. By the time she was nineteen, she had a husband and two sons to care for. She wanted adventure as a girl growing up in North Carolina, but she never could have imagined the rigorous life that awaited her out west. If you love history, you will enjoy reading the true story of Zola. The author developed the characters' personalities based on Kyle Johnson's notes and the stories he told the author. Conversations were fabricated according to the facts.
