October begins at midnight in Brimstone Hollow, and Sylvia Marrow is alone in her grandmother's house with every lamp burning. The mantel clock has just finished chiming. The garden lies gray with mist, and at the treeline a light is flickering where she has never once seen a light.
By morning the leaves have come down and the road into town is empty. The shop windows are lit, and no one is standing inside them. The hours slip. A jar of honey waits with a label in a stranger's careful hand.
The Hollow knows more than it will say. Its oldest families keep their doors shut and their rules unspoken, and the clock in Sylvia's front room has started keeping a time of its own. Something in the valley has been waiting a long while for October, and this year it will not wait quietly.
