Trouble is My Business
Hard-Boiled Philip Marlowe Mysteries of Blackmail, Corruption, and Los Angeles NoirBy Raymond Chandler

About this audiobook
Raymond Chandler's Trouble Is My Business gathers four hard-boiled detective stories that exemplify the author's distinctive fusion of intricate plotting, atmospheric description, and mordantly lyrical prose. Centered largely on Philip Marlowe, these narratives move through corrupt institutions, compromised wealth, violent underworlds, and morally ambiguous private lives, transforming the investigation into a scrutiny of modern American society. Chandler's clipped dialogue, startling metaphors, and first-person irony refine the conventions of pulp crime fiction into a literature of disillusionment, while the recurring tension between professional integrity and social corruption gives the collection its thematic coherence. Together, the stories occupy an important place in the development of twentieth-century noir and the evolution of the detective genre. Born in Chicago and raised partly in England, Chandler brought to American crime writing both literary ambition and a sharply observant understanding of class, manners, and institutional power. After losing his position in the oil industry during the Depression, he turned to fiction, learning the discipline of popular magazine writing before producing the novels and stories that established his reputation. His experience of economic instability, urban modernity, and Hollywood's culture of performance informed his skeptical vision of Los Angeles and its inhabitants. This collection is especially recommended for readers interested in noir, detective fiction, and the relationship between popular literature and social criticism. It offers accessible suspense alongside stylistic brilliance, making it an excellent introduction to Chandler's artistry and a rewarding study in the cultural meanings of crime.
