About this audiobook
What is the ultimate purpose of government? For Thomas Hobbes, a man who lived through the bloody chaos of the English Civil War, the answer was brutally simple: to save us from ourselves. This guide introduces the formidable thinker who stripped politics down to its bare essentials.
You will journey into his famous "state of nature"—a terrifying world with no rules, where life is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." You will then witness the logical escape route he engineers: the social contract, a desperate bargain where we trade our natural freedom for the one thing we crave more—security. From this contract rises the Leviathan, an all-powerful sovereign designed to enforce peace with an iron fist.
By confronting the darkest aspects of human nature, Hobbes forces us to ask the most fundamental questions about power, fear, and the price we are willing to pay for order. This is the story of the dark, brilliant, and essential foundation of modern political thought.
