About this audiobook
The War-Workers & Consequences brings together two acute early novels by E. M. Delafield, displaying her gift for social comedy sharpened into moral critique. The War-Workers satirizes the bureaucracy, vanity, and class assumptions surrounding women's voluntary labor during the First World War, while Consequences turns inward, tracing the emotional starvation and social conditioning of a young woman shaped by family, convent education, and narrow expectations. Written in lucid, ironic prose, these works belong to the interwar and post-Edwardian tradition of feminist realism, exposing the costs of dutiful femininity. E. M. Delafield, best known for The Diary of a Provincial Lady, drew on her own background among the English upper-middle classes, her convent education, and her wartime experience in voluntary service. Her fiction repeatedly examines the gap between respectable surfaces and private distress, especially for women trained to suppress intelligence, anger, and desire. These novels reveal the serious foundations beneath her later comic brilliance. This volume is recommended to readers interested in women's writing, First World War home-front fiction, and the social history of early twentieth-century Britain. It offers both wit and pathos, rewarding anyone who values psychologically observant, historically alert fiction.
