The Voyage of Bran
A Celtic Otherworld Journey of Silver-Branch Enchantment, Deathless Islands, and Altered TimeBy Anonymous

About this audiobook
The Voyage of Bran (Immram Brain) is a landmark of medieval Irish voyage literature, recounting Bran mac Febal's journey across the western sea toward the Otherworld after hearing a mysterious song from a silver branch. Moving between prophetic vision, marvel narrative, lyrical dialogue, and episodic adventure, the text presents enchanted islands, immortal inhabitants, perilous temporal dislocation, and the haunting impossibility of returning unchanged. Its interweaving of pre-Christian Celtic motifs with Christian ideas about mortality, sin, paradise, and the limits of human knowledge places it within the rich tradition of the immrama, while its sophisticated prose and embedded verse reveal the literary culture of early medieval Ireland. The work is anonymous, as are many texts preserved in Ireland's medieval manuscript tradition, and survives in forms shaped by scribal transmission and later adaptation. Its author—or the learned milieu that produced it—drew upon native mythic materials, monastic learning, biblical and classical models of voyage, and the intellectual fascination with geography and the boundaries of the known world. The narrative's tension between oral legend and Christian literary reflection is central to its enduring complexity. This edition is especially rewarding for readers interested in Celtic mythology, comparative literature, medieval travel narratives, and the formation of Irish literary identity. The Voyage of Bran offers both the imaginative pleasure of an otherworldly adventure and a subtle meditation on longing, time, knowledge, and the cost of crossing cultural and metaphysical boundaries.
