About this audiobook
In The Upas Tree, Florence L. Barclay turns the popular Edwardian romance into a moral and spiritual parable. The "upas tree," long a symbol of poisonous influence, becomes the governing image for hidden mistrust, wounded pride, and the destructive growth of unspoken wrongs within intimate life. Written in Barclay's characteristically lucid, earnest, and emotionally heightened prose, the novel belongs to the tradition of late-Victorian and Edwardian domestic fiction, yet it is shaped by a distinctly Christian imagination: love is tested not merely by circumstance, but by conscience, forgiveness, and self-surrender. Florence L. Barclay, born Florence Louisa Charlesworth in 1862, was the wife of an Anglican clergyman and moved naturally within the religious, social, and domestic worlds her fiction often portrays. Her immense success with The Rosary established her as a writer of spiritually inflected romance, attentive to music, feeling, and moral crisis. The Upas Tree reflects the concerns that animated much of her work: the sanctity of love, the dangers of spiritual blindness, and the healing power of grace. Readers drawn to thoughtful romantic fiction with ethical depth will find The Upas Tree rewarding. It is especially recommended to those interested in women's popular writing, Christian romance, and the emotional culture of the early twentieth century.
