The Shrieking Pit & The Hand in the Dark (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. Detective Grant Colwyn's Murder CasesBy Arthur J. Rees

About this audiobook
Bringing together two of Arthur J. Rees's strongest crime narratives, The Shrieking Pit & The Hand in the Dark offers a richly atmospheric entry into early twentieth-century detective fiction. The Shrieking Pit turns on murder, secrecy, and local superstition in a brooding rural landscape, while The Hand in the Dark develops the country-house mystery through concealed motives, family tensions, and forensic deduction. Rees writes in a measured, intelligent prose style, combining melodramatic suspense with the emerging discipline of clue-based detection that would soon define the Golden Age. Arthur J. Rees was an Australian-born journalist and novelist whose professional familiarity with reportage, criminal investigation, and public scandal informed his fiction. Like many writers of his generation, he stood between Victorian sensation fiction and modern detective method, adapting gothic atmosphere to more rational forms of inquiry. His experience in newspapers helped sharpen his sense of pacing, evidence, and the social anxieties surrounding crime. This volume is recommended to readers interested in the evolution of detective fiction before Christie and Sayers, especially those who value mood, intricate plotting, and historically grounded mystery.
This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience.
