The Romance of Antar
A Pre-Islamic Arabian Epic of Bedouin Honor, Tribal Warfare, Love Poetry, and a Warrior-Poet's Quest for RecognitionBy Anonymous

About this audiobook
The Romance of Antar is the expansive Arabic popular epic recounting the life of ʿAntara ibn Shaddād, the celebrated pre-Islamic warrior-poet, whose courage, eloquence, and quest for recognition are inseparable from his experience as the son of an enslaved African woman. Combining martial adventure, tribal rivalry, courtship, poetry, and marvel, the narrative centers on Antar's devotion to ʿAbla and his struggle to win both her hand and a secure place within the tribe of Abs. Its episodic structure, formulaic repetitions, and alternation between prose narration and verse reflect an oral storytelling tradition later shaped into a monumental prose romance. It thus belongs both to the heroic literature of Arabia and to the wider medieval tradition of chivalric romance. Although no single author can be identified, the work bears the imprint of generations of performers, scribes, and audiences who preserved and elaborated the legend. Its anonymous form is therefore historically meaningful: the romance transforms a figure known from early Arabic poetry into a cultural hero whose exploits could express ideals of bravery, generosity, loyalty, and poetic authority. The narrative's attention to racial stigma, social hierarchy, and earned nobility also gives Antar's story an unusual ethical and psychological resonance. Readers interested in epic literature, Arabic cultural history, oral tradition, or the comparative study of romance will find The Romance of Antar especially rewarding. Its scale and repetitions invite immersion, while its vivid battles, passionate love story, and complex hero make it accessible as both adventure and serious cultural document.
