About this audiobook

The Real Tsaritsa is an intimate memoir and apologia for Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, written against the hostile legends that gathered around the last Romanov court after 1917. Combining eyewitness recollection, court anecdote, and personal vindication, the book offers a sympathetic portrait of the Tsaritsa as wife, mother, invalid, and devout sovereign consort. Its style is direct, elegiac, and defensive, belonging to the broader literature of émigré testimony that sought to correct revolutionary caricature and preserve the human texture of imperial Russia's final years. Lili Den, more commonly known as Lili Dehn, was a lady-in-waiting and close friend of Alexandra, with privileged access to the private world of the imperial family. Her social position, loyalty, and firsthand experience shaped the book's purpose: to rebut accusations of hysteria, treason, and sinister influence that had attached to the Empress, especially in connection with Rasputin and Russia's wartime collapse. Dehn writes not as a detached historian, but as a witness defending the dead. This book is recommended to readers interested in Romanov history, women's memoir, and the contested memory of revolution. Read critically, it is invaluable: partial, poignant, and historically revealing.
